OCEC is a sponsor of the Orange County Science & Engineering Fair granting awards to two students in the Senior Division and to four students in the Junior Division. Members of the OCEC Executive Committee interview the students and decide on the recipients of the OCEC awards. The monetary portion of each award is given to each winner in a ceremony during the first OCEC Board meeting following the Science & Engineering Fair. During the ceremony, winner of the OCEC awards present their project before the OCEC Board and answer questions asked by OCEC Board members.
RocketScienceTutors (RST), partially sponsored by OCEC, is a big hit!! In May, RST completed the 7th year of its highly successful after school program at four middle schools in the Santa Ana Unified District: McFadden, Mendez, MacArthur and Sierra. In the 24 week program, staffed by an all-volunteer workforce of working & retired engineers and engineering graduate students from the University of California Irvine (UCI), middle school students get involved with hands-on labs including solar powered cars, simple machines, basic chemistry, optics and electronics. The RST program is inquiry-based, meaning that students are challenged with building something. Thanks to funding from organizations such as OCEC, RST is able to provide this program at no cost to the students or school district. RST is gearing up to add Santa Ana's Willard Intermediate School.
